Evaluated simulations

Each row is a mudflow simulation. Columns marked ✓ meet the acceptance criterion set before simulation: at least 60 % of observed streets with mud, 3 of 4 affected sites reached, mud within 200 m of Padre Hurtado, and at least 50 % of simulated urban mud inside the official affected area from IDE Chile (the perimeter published by the press was used until 10 October; all runs now use the official area). “With mud” means a maximum thickness greater than 5 cm. These criteria use fitting observations: they measure compatibility, not validation. The sites column shows the raw value: with the normal time step, the campus control point may exceed 5 cm even though it remains at 0.01 m with a fine time step; under amendment 1 of the protocol, in those cases the index is calculated without that point (see Simulations). Mud: fluid = Glenwood 2b with Cv 0.40, except where the scenario specifies another concentration (for example, lower hillside with Cv 0.10 or 0.27, Cv 0.43 or Cv 0.25); thick = Glenwood 1 (Cv 0.45); very fluid = Aspen 2 (O'Brien and Julien rheologies).UC Christus: about 1 m was reported in the emergency department.

The 19 campus microsimulations use a different domain and mesh, and are described in Simulations and in the paper.

Las Condes debris flow 8 October 2026 millimeters 20 minutes rainfall intensity foothills

Search to verify the figure “27 mm in 20 min (16:29–16:49)” from an unsourced text contributed by Lester: it does not appear in press reports. The “25 mm” appears to come from Canal 9 (10-Oct), which reports a FORECAST of up to 25 mm for 11–13 October, not the rainfall on 8-Oct. Cooperativa and Emol: intense rainfall over a very short period, without figures. The measured data from CR2 (Río Molina) and DMC (Tobalaba) are retained.
